The other night we listened to a wonderful sermon by John MacArthur called, "The Speech of the New Man." You can click that link and listen to the sermon!  I would highly recommend the listening to both sermons!  The tongue is such a struggle for every person!  I thought I'd share some highlights from the first sermon.  The passage being studied was:

 Colossians 4: 2-6:

"Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person."

Such a rich, full passage that gives us some clear direction!  One of the first quotes that was right on point was, "If you have a renewed heart, you will have a renewed mouth."  Makes a lot of sense!  A new man whom God has called will want and seek to please God in everything!!  Speech included.  When someone doesn't know the Lord their speech is often much different than someone who loves Jesus.  "The unredeemed mouth is the gate for which depravity makes it's exit."

MacArthur went on to name 20 struggles of the Unredeemed Mouth.

1.) Speaks evil 2.) Lust/provocative speech 3.) Deceit 4.) Curses/swears 5.) Speaks Oppression 6.) Lies 7.) Twists and perverts things 8.) Speaks Destruction 9.) Vanity 10.) Flattery 11.) Foolishness/Folly 12.) Madness/Babbles 13.) Talks too much 14.) Talks Idly 15.) Evil plots 16.) Talks to make $ 17.) Speaks Boastfully 18.) Speaks Hatred 19.) Filthy Communication 20.) Speaks Gossip

Romans 3:13

“Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.”

** "A new man should have a new mouth, a new mouth should have new speech." **

I think this a great springboard for anyone to look at and to have a little mouth check up.  Is the Lord truly the Lord of your life?  We each have sins we struggle with.  I am not telling you that if you struggle with one of these points that you don't know the Lord.  If God has called your heart unto His, He will do the work and convict and change you!  Pray and ask Him to help!  If He truly has transformed your life, then your mouth will follow. If you live a life full of these 20 points and He draws your heart, you will feel convicted and sorrowful for continuing on in that sin.  The Christian life is daily repentance. God will forgive! It may be a struggle but, with God's power it can be overcome!

In future posts I will chat about the Redeemed Mouth and what it should look like!  I hope this will be some good information that was as helpful for you as it has been for us! If someone claims to be a christian their speech will tell quickly if they truly are God's.

Luke 6: 43-45

“For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,  for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks."

* The purpose for any of my posts are NOT to judge anyone but, to be helpful as we exam our lives next to God's word. Praying God can use these verses and points to convict hearts, including my own.
